The founders of the 2nd Street Festival last month announced a unique partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) in presenting its annual event in Northern Liberties on Sunday, July 31. The result is a FREE 6-block party, with your favorite restaurants and bars, four stages, crafts, kids programs, workshops, and a critically-acclaimed lineup. The performer list, programmed by PFS and partners Point Entertainment, is packed to the brim with everything from authentic roots to cult favorites, from traditional folk to hip hop, indie and R&B.

Read some of what the press is already saying:
“It is really unique to have such an amazing first go at this,” admitted Levi Landis, Executive Director of PFS. “This is the perfect pre-celebration to the 50th Philadelphia Folk Festival in August, and a great way to introduce a wider audience to different aspects of folk music. The community has opened its arms wide to include us on this event.”
Indeed, the festival founders are none other than Owen Kamihira, owner of Bar Ferdinand and El Camino Real, Oron Daskal of North Bowl, and William Reed of Standard Tap and Johnny Brenda’s. Their restaurants and a host of others in the heart of Northern Liberties, ground the festival in food, merriment, and music. “These are a group of young business owners that understand what it takes to make a festival burst at all seams,” Landis claims. The festival will again host three all-day stages at 2nd street intersections with Poplar, George, and Fairmount, sponsored by Jose Cuervo. And an additional stage has been added at the Piazza, programmed in partnership with No. Libs’ own Electric Factory concerts, sponsored as a free addition by Skinny Water, and featuring emerging sensation tUnE-YarDs, local supergroup Black Landlord, instrumental phenomenon Delicate Steve, and legendary host Gene Shay.
Also new, the stage at Fairmount will feature kid’s performances and workshops with Cat’s Pajamas, Philly School of Rock, Krista Parrish, and Electric Man. There will be a special puppet- and mask-making workshop with Ramshackle Enterprises, who will lead into a 2nd street parade with puppeteers and musicians The Great Unknown and Mason Porter, part of the Philly Folk Parade collective.
The 2nd Street Festival is still accepting volunteers as well as craft, food, merchandise, and nonprofit vendors as part of its celebration. Click here for more information on vending or volunteering.
