Great Groove Band!
Your child can perform in The Great Groove Band on the Martin Stage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. A three day participatory program for school age children, The Great Groove Band makes fiddle and folk music accessible to young people who sing or play a (mostly) stringed instrument.
Participants join the band for the weekend, rehearsing intensively for three days before a main-stage performance on Sunday. The 2008 bands included fiddlers, guitarists, bass players, drummers, pianists, flutists and more. Click here to learn more about the Great Groove Band.
The Philadelphia Folk Festival is a family-friendly event. Children under age 12 are admitted at no charge to all concerts; children under age 5 are admitted at no charge to the campgrounds. Many family-centered activities are available throughout the day at the Festival.
Children ages 4 to 12 can make hands-on crafts: a sun catcher, a butterfly, a mask, or a pompom critter, or something else to bring home from the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
The Festival sponsors an interactive creation opportunity for parents and children to work together, in the shade. The crafts area is in Dulcimer Grove (see site map), the shady area between the Crafts Stage and Camp Stage. The Festival provides the materials and the basic ideas for crafts creations; your children bring the imagination and the talent. Watch the jugglers bobble and listen to storytellers while kids make a souvenir to take home. Kids Crafts are available Friday from 1 to 4 pm; Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Dulcimer Grove. Just stop by.
Also, featured in Dulcimer Grove you will find the Give & Take Jugglers. The Give & Take Jugglers are a Festival fixture for more than 30 years, entertaining children of all ages. So many people have learned to juggle at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, it is impossible to keep up with the numbers. Whether you want to learn to do it yourself, or only want to watch the magic, take a break in shady Dulcimer Grove on Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Click here for more info on the Give and Take Jugglers.
Parents: Dulcimer Grove is not day care; please work with your children. As always, young children who appear to be alone or without parental supervision will be taken to the Information Booth to await parents.
